Phonak Marvel Technology Now Available in Customs and BTE Hearing Aids

Phonak, a provider of hearing aid solutions, announced its Marvel technology availability in additional styles and form factors spanning “nearly ever degree of hearing loss.” This includes an expanded portfolio of custom in-the-ear (ITE), super-power, and pediatric hearing aids across multiple performance levels, according to Phonak. Marvel connectivity is said to allow “hand-free calls as well as audio streaming to virtually any Bluetooth enabled devices like smartphones, tablets, computers, or TVs.”

At January’s 2020 International CES, Phonak unveiled Virto™ M Black, described as “a fully-connected hearing aid shaped like a hearable.” Virto M Black is said to be Phonak’s first custom-made hearing aid equipped with Marvel technology, including universal Bluetooth®streaming, hands-free phone calls, and a personalized hearing experience via the myPhonak app. Virto M Black was named a “Best of CES Winner in Accessibility” from Engadget, the “Best Medical Device” by Slashgear, and was included among Newsweek’s “Best of CES 2020: The Top Tech Products You Can Actually Buy This Year.”

Continuing this momentum is the release of Virto M NW and Virto M-Titanium, which Phonak says offers Marvel’s “signature exceptional sound quality in a smaller device, down to an invisible-in-canal (IIC).” Thanks to the Titanium FitGuide, over 50% of people are said to get an “even more discreet Virto M-Titanium fitting by an average of 2.5 mm.1” All Virto M hearing aids include Biometric Calibration, which is said to analyze “over 1,600 biometric data points to precisely calibrate the device to a patient’s individual ear anatomy,” according to Phonak.

The Phonak Sky™ portfolio now includes the new Sky M-SP in all four performance levels. Sky Mis powered by AutoSense Sky OS 3.0, the next generation of Phonak’s operating system designed specifically for children. All Sky M hearing aids can stream audio from virtually any Bluetooth device and directly connect to Roger microphones, helping give children “easier access to words and conversation at school and home.”

Also available today is Naída™ M-SP, offering “powerful, rich sound, universal Bluetooth streaming from iOS®and Android™ devices, and RogerDirect™ connectivity for unparalleled hearing in noise and over distance.2” Naída M is suitable for people with severe-to-profound hearing loss and provides 24% less listening effort in noise and with StereoZoom.*3 For words which are difficult to predict, StereoZoom improves recall in noise by 10%.*3

Phonak’s expanded Marvel portfolio will be available in various countries around the globe over the coming weeks and pre-orders in the US began on February 19.

Researchers Restore Hearing via Gene Therapy in Deaf Mouse Model

Published on February 21, 2019

In collaboration with the universities of Miami, Columbia, and San Francisco, scientists from the Institut Pasteur, Inserm, CNRS, Collège de France, Sorbonne University, and the University of Clermont Auvergne have managed to restore hearing in an adult mouse model of DFNB9 deafness, a hearing disorder that represents one of the most frequent cases of congenital genetic deafness, Institut Pasteur announced on its website. Individuals with DFNB9 deafness are profoundly deaf as they are deficient in the gene coding for otoferlin, a protein which is essential for transmitting sound information at the auditory sensory cell synapses. By carrying out an intracochlear injection of this gene in an adult DFNB9 mouse model, the scientists successfully restored auditory synapse function and hearing thresholds to a near-normal level. These findings, published in the journal PNAS, open up new avenues for future gene therapy trials in patients with DFNB9.

Over half of nonsyndromic profound congenital deafness cases have a genetic cause, and most (~80%) of these cases are due to autosomal recessive forms of deafness (DFNB). Cochlear implants are currently the only option for recovering hearing in these patients.

Adeno-associated viruses (AAVs) are among the most promising vectors for therapeutic gene transfer to treat human diseases. AAV-based gene therapy is a promising therapeutic option for treating deafness but its application is limited by a potentially narrow therapeutic window. In humans, inner ear development is completed in utero and hearing becomes possible at approximately 20 weeks of gestation. In addition, genetic forms of congenital deafness are generally diagnosed during the neonatal period. Gene therapy approaches in animal models must therefore take this into account, and gene therapy efficacy must be demonstrated following a gene injection when the auditory system is already in place. In other words, therapy must reverse existing deafness. The team led by Saaïd Safieddine, a CNRS researcher in the Genetics and Physiology of Hearing Unit (Institut Pasteur/ Inserm) and coordinator of the project, used a mouse model of DFNB9, a form of human deafness that represents 2-8% of all cases of congenital genetic deafness.

DFNB9 deafness is caused by mutations in the gene coding for otoferlin, a protein that plays a key role in transmitting sound information at the inner hair cell synapses. Mutant mice deficient in otoferlin are profoundly deaf as these synapses fail to release neurotransmitters in response to sound stimulation, despite the absence of detectable sensory epithelial defects. DFNB9 mice therefore constitute an appropriate model for testing the efficacy of viral gene therapy when it is administered at a late stage. However, as AAVs have limited DNA packaging capacity (approximately 4.7 kilobase (kb)), it is difficult to use this technique for genes whose coding region (cDNA) exceeds 5 kb, such as the gene coding for otoferlin, which has a 6 kb coding region. The scientists have overcome this limitation by adapting an AAV approach known as dual AAV strategy because it uses two different recombinant vectors, one containing the 5’-end and the other the 3’-end of the otoferlin cDNA.

A single intracochlear injection of the vector pair in adult mutant mice was used to reconstruct the otoferlin coding region by recombining 5′ and 3′-end DNA segments, leading to long-term restoration of otoferlin expression in the inner hair cells, and then restored hearing.

The scientists have therefore obtained initial proof of the concept of viral transfer of fragmented cDNA in the cochlea using two vectors, showing that this approach can be used to produce otoferlin and durably correct the profound deafness phenotype in mice.

The outcomes achieved by the scientists suggest that the therapeutic window for local gene transfer in patients with DFNB9 congenital deafness could be wider than thought, and offers hope of extending these findings to other forms of deafness. These results are the subject of a patent application filed.

In addition to the institutions mentioned in the first paragraph, this research was funded by the French Foundation for Medical Research, the European Union (TREAT RUSH), and the French National Research Agency (EargenCure and Lifesenses LabEx).

GN Hearing and Google Partner to Enable Direct Streaming from Android Devices to Hearing Aids

GN Hearing and Google have announced a new technology partnership that will reportedly make GN Hearing the first manufacturer to enable a full spectrum of direct audio streaming from Android devices to hearing aids. In a future Android release, direct streaming may also become available for ReSound LiNX Quattro™ and Beltone Amaze™ hearing aid users.

“According to the World Health Organization, around 466 million peopleworldwide have disabling hearing loss,” said Seang Chau, vice president of engineering at Google. “This number is expected to increase to 900 million people by the year 2050. Google is working with GN Hearing to create a new open specification for hearing aid streaming support on future versions of Android devices.”

According to the joint announcement, users will be able to connect and monitor their hearing aids without using an intermediate device for streaming from Android phones and tablets to their hearing aids.

“Our goal with PRO LINE® Advanced is to answer the unmet needs of hearing aid wearers. To do this, we gathered input from daily users and hearing health professionals in developing our new technology and packaging,” said Ann Rule, senior director of marketing at Spectrum Brands’ Rayovac Division. “The innovations make the batteries last longer than our previous formulation and easier to store, handle, and use.”

Battery life is ranked as one of the most important factors when patients choose hearing aid batteries, which is why Rayovac developed its new Active Core Technology.

To achieve high quality performance Active Core Technology is designed to incorporate:

  • An Optimized Form to provide more critical ingredients and help deliver more capacity than Rayovac’s previous design.
  • An Advanced Anode to help ensure quality performance through the life of the battery.
  • Secure Seal to provide cell stability in extreme conditions.

In addition to improving the technology, Rayovac reinvented its traditional dial-package after Rayovac research revealed patients were frustrated with their hearing aid battery packaging. To address this issue, Rayovac has made the package easier to handle and added several new features designed to keep the batteries clean, more secure, and protected than the previous packaging.

Innovative features include:

  • A new lock dial system, which helps keep the package from spinning freely, giving the user more control.
  • A prominent, forward-facing front door allows the user to see and lift each individual battery out of the package without having to flip the package over.
  • Longer and wider tabs make it easier to see, remove, and handle batteries.
  • User-friendly package size and shape is designed to fit easily in an open hand and has a perforated rounded edge, making the dial removable for convenient transport or storage.

Rayovac’s hearing aid battery delivery system will be available on its PRO LINE® Advanced line through hearing health professionals on January 3, 2018.
